The Modern will keep most mothers happy: great food, great service, beautiful decor and scenery, and it's worth the $48 for the prix fixe lunch menu.
Make a booking, 212.333.1220, a week in advance, for the restaurant (the bar room is more casual and great for drinks and light stuff. They'll call you back to confirm.
Show up on time, they may put you in the lounge area for a drink while they get your table ready.
The waiters serve beautifully, so sit back and enjoy the service. Everything on the menu is superb, the award winning chef, Gabriel Kreuther a native of Alsace, is imaginative and quite brilliant.
Chocolates made on the premises are served after desert. Mmmm.
