Announcement: The 2014 New York City Messiah performances: but which one?

Handel's Messiah in New York City 2014

I have some suggestions for you if you are looking into which New York City Handel's Messiah to attend in 2014

The New York Philharmonic
offers the most popular Messiah performances, with 5 opportunities to watch:

Tickets  $29.00 - $118.00

Gary Thor Wedow:   Conductor

Camilla Tilling:  Soprano
Iestyn Davies: Counter-tenor
Michael Slattery:  Tenor
James Westman:  Baritone

Westminster Symphonic Choir
 Joe Miller, director

Avery Fisher Hall (directions)

If you are in the mood for Carnegie Hall:
Monday December 17, 2012 at 8:00pm
Carnegie Hall
881 Seventh Avenue
New York City, New York 10019

The Oratorio Society of New York’s annual performance - since 1874 - of Handel’s Messiah is as much a part of the holiday season in New York City as Macy's window and the tree at Rockefeller Center.
The New York Times calls the Society’s performances "thrilling." The Daily News says that this Messiah is "commanding… first rate!" Handel, the ultimate showman, would agree with both of them that this is "the best Messiah in town."
Website and Tickets: $25 - $90
For further information call 212-400-7255, or e-mail

Also popular for its finely honed vocal ensemble is the Masterwork Chorus
performing in Carnegie Hall, conducted by the well loved Andrew Megill
This lot always puts on a great show.

Wednesday 18th December: 8pm
Tickets: call CarnegieCharge at 212 247 7800

55 Washington Square South

Plan to get there before 2:30

At least once, you must hear the boys sing
and St Thomas Church is your cacophonous venue:

Tuesday December 9th 2014  at 7:30
Thursday December 11th 2014  at 7:30

Tickets $35 - $95

In her New York Times review, music critic Vivien Schweitzer writes, "The annual Saint Thomas version (of Messiah) is a king among the innumerable performances in New York, admired for the pure sound of the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys and the spirited playing of Concert Royal, a period-instrument ensemble."

Herald the joyous holiday season with a performance of Handel's Messiah in the cavernous setting of Saint Thomas Church in New York City.

Hi Peeta,
Funny, I Googled The Messiah, Handel, NYC and your blog came up. Thanks for the info. This is one of my favorite things to do at Xmas time. Maybe we can get a group together and go!

It would be terrific to add another option to this list: The Riverside Choral Society will be performing The Messiah in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on Sat., December 21, 2013. Highly accomplished choir.... and less expensive than the Philharmonic on the other side of Lincoln Center! Usually sells out, so get tickets early. Thanks!
